Auckland Area Manager

What’s your position at Max, share with us a bit about your journey and how you got to where you are today?

I am an Auckland Area Manager responsible for 7 Max stores and 5 Barkers stores. I fell into retail 10 years ago after leaving uni, having not fallen in love with my Communications degree. Without knowing what to do next, I thought I would work full time, save some money, and do a bit of travel before returning to uni. Instead, I found my passion in people management and discovered how empowering the world of fashion is! I grew from strength to strength across many retailers before I landed in Max 4 years ago and haven’t looked back!

What do you think helped you get so far in your career? How can we mentor young girls to dream bigger?

My mum taught me that success and nice things don’t come without hard work, so I’ve always had her to inspire me to do and be better so honestly, it comes from the remarkable women I’ve had as coaches throughout the years that have taught me everything I know; in life and in my career so I’m very lucky! Women are amazing and capable of anything. We have a natural ability to be empathetic and driven to get the best out of people so if we as leaders can harness those instincts, we can inspire passion in the young girls in our life to achieve anything they set their minds to.

What’s a piece in your wardrobe you can’t live without?

A good black blazer. I honestly wear mine with EVERYTHING! There’s something about slipping one on over jeans, a dress or using it with good black pants as a suit that makes me feel powerful and ready for anything the day throws at me!

What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned through your time in this industry?

Crikey – I’ve learnt a lot as it’s been a while! I think the biggest and most current lesson is to embrace change. This industry is constantly changing and being open to that change and embracing it is key to learning, growing, and enjoying what you do. In these current times, so much has and is changing, and often with very little notice, so having the confidence and belief in yourself and your team to navigate through it together is key.

What is the most important message you want to send out to women thinking about their careers?

Be brave – take that step, even if it frightens you! I would most likely not be in the role I’m in today without having taken several significant, scary leaps of faith along the way.

What’s a piece in your wardrobe you can’t live without?

I’m a jeans girl so a great pair of jeans! You can dress them up or dress them down to suit the occasion – so I might have a few perfect pairs in my wardrobe!

How important is it for women to lift one another up and what does it mean to you?

You're the author of your own story, the star of your own show and your own biggest fan. It's a wonderful reminder that this is your life to live.

Who’s the most inspirational woman in your life and why?

My mum. Everyday! She is so strong, like many, we all go through struggles but regardless of the hardship, she takes each experience as a lesson for her own growth and continues to strive to be strong. I think it’s the best thing I’ve learnt from her.

What’s a piece in your wardrobe you can’t live without?

The black slip skirt! I have worn it to almost every occasion.
