The Spring Dress Edit
Dresses That Work in a New Zealand Spring
Spring. The season of longer days, lighter layers, shorter hems, and checking the weather app more times than you’d care to admit, because the forecast changes almost as often as your outfit.
Because in New Zealand, spring doesn’t exactly arrive all at once. One minute it’s sunny enough to consider bare legs, the next there’s a southerly doing its thing. So, while we’re very ready to put winter behind us, we’re not quite ready to give up layers just yet.
Enter: the spring dress.
They really do help you dress the part. Easy to throw on, simple to style, and ready for wherever the day takes you. Dresses you can wear with boots now, or your fave sandals when spring finally gets the memo.
Here are the spring dresses worth making room for in your wardrobe.

What should you wear this spring?
Spring dressing is all about the layers, and wearing an outfit that can handle a little bit of everything. Start with a dress that looks good on its own, then add or subtract depending the occasion. A fine knit for cooler mornings, ready to be tied around your waist or draped over your shoulders when the day warms up.
A denim jacket for heading out. A blazer for work. Boots now, sandals and heels for later.
The trick? Dress for the weather you have, not the weather you were promised. And when the sun finally makes an appearance, you’re already wearing the perfect spring dress.
One dress, endless outfits
The best spring dresses don’t just make one outfit; they make your whole wardrobe work harder. We’re all for outfit repeating, restyling and bringing in the pieces you already own. Better cost per wear, more ways to wear it. Work smarter, dress better.
Wear yours with the denim jacket you’ve loved forever, add your favourite oversized tee or throw on your work blazer. Layer a knit over the top when the temperature drops, add a belt to play with the shape, and wear it with boots now and sandals later.
It’s less about buying a whole new spring wardrobe and more about finding new ways to wear the pieces you already love.
Fewer new clothes. More cute outfits. We like the sound of that.

The everyday midi dress
The dress you reach for when you have places to be and approximately three minutes to get dressed.
A good midi is the ultimate spring wardrobe multitasker. Long enough to feel polished, easy for everyday wear, and versatile by design to take you from morning coffee to after-work drinks, no outfit change required.
By day, style your midi dress with sneakers and a denim jacket, layer a fitted tee under your dress, or your fave oversized printed tee over the top (we love the sleeves cuffed and the hem knotted). By night, swap in heels, layered jewellery, statement bag, and a blazer.
One dress. Countless plans. Getting dressed really is that easy.
Print Worthy Dresses
Florals for spring? We’re not going to pretend they’re groundbreaking. But when the prints are this good, does it really need to be?
Our spring prints are originally hand-painted in our Auckland studio by talented textile designer Nellie Ryan, making each one a little more special than your average seasonal floral.
A few of our faves this season? Riviera Floral, Teacup Floral and Poppy Floral.
When your print dress is a work of art, let it fo all the talking. Keep the styling simple with minimal jewellery and a strappy sandal or heel. Always bring a layer with you, whatever the weather. A denim shirt or denim jacket is a print dresses best friend.
Our only rule for wearing florals? If you’re going to wear one, make it a good one.

The long-sleeve dress
Short sleeves might say spring, but a long-sleeve dress says, I checked the forecast.
It’s the piece in your wardrobe you’ll be glad to have when the morning starts at 8°C and the afternoon suddenly decides it’s 20°C. A long-sleeve dress gives you coverage without committing to a full winter outfit, and lets you keep wearing your favourite boots while the seasons figure themselves out.
Layer a knit over the top for extra warmth, add a jacket before heading out, then lose the layers when the sun finally makes an appearance.
Spring is here. She’s just keeping us guessing.
The final layer
Spring dressing isn’t about packing away your winter wardrobe and becoming a spring personality overnight. It’s about finding the middle ground, and the best spring dresses make it easy.
It’s all about versatility. Dresses that work with a denim or faux-leather jacket, a lightweight knit layered over the top, boots on cooler mornings and sandals when the sun comes out. Add a silk scarf, or layered jewellery and getting dressed already feels more fun.
Because the best spring dresses don't just look pretty. They work with your wardrobe, your plans and whatever the weather decides to do next.

Spring dress questions, answered
What should you wear to a spring wedding in New Zealand?
A midi dress you can layer over. Spring weddings tend to start warm and end cold, often outdoors, so look for a fabric with a bit of weight to it and bring a fine knit or blazer you'd actually be happy to be photographed in. A print does the dressing-up for you.
How do you layer a dress in spring without losing its shape?
Layer over the top half, not the whole thing. A fine knit worn over the dress and half-tucked keeps the waist visible. A denim jacket or blazer left open does the same. The trick is letting the dress still read as a dress, rather than disappearing under everything else.
Can you wear a midi dress to work?
Easily, and it's the least effort you'll ever put into looking put together. A midi dress in a plain colour with a blazer over it reads as tailored without being a suit. Swap the blazer for a knit at five and it's dinner. One decision, two settings.
How do you style a slip dress in spring?
Over a tee, or under a knit. A slip dress on its own is a summer proposition, but layered over a fine long-sleeve top it works from now onwards, and the contrast of the two fabrics does something a plain dress can't. Add a jacket and it holds up outdoors.
